Cuban Proverb

Cuban Proverb

Buenos días. Necesito ayuda para traducir este proverbio bastante

coloquial: "No arrugues que no hay quien planche". El contexto es el

siguiente: Sabemos que no podemos abandonar, aun cuando todo parezca o

esté en contra (luego viene el proverbio). Según lo que encontré en la

web, quiere decir: "No molestes que no es el momento adecuado", pero

este significado no se relaciona con el contexto.

Muchas gracias por su ayuda

Melanie

===> En Ingles hay uno similar que se centra en la idea: "people who lives in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"

Spanish-Using Progressive Verb Forms -from- Free Spanish Lessons

Spanish-Using Progressive Verb Forms -from- Free Spanish Lessons

Common Mistake Is To Overuse Them

One of the common mistakes made by native English speakers when they speak Spanish is to overuse the progressive forms of verbs. While progressive verb forms are common in English and often replace the simple tenses, in Spanish the progressive forms typically are used in special circumstances or to provide a nuance of meaning that isn't necessarily present in English.

The progressive forms in English are those made by following a conjugation of the verb "to be" with a gerund, that is, the "-ing" form of the verb. Thus the following sentences (with the progressive form in boldface) demonstrate use of the progressive form: I am drinking the milk. We will be leaving at 8. He was thinking about her.

The progressive form, sometimes known as the continuous form, in Spanish is very similar in terms of structure.

It is made by following a form of the verb estar with the gerund, that is, the form of the verb that typically ends in -ando or -iendo. Here are some examples of its use: Está nevando. Pedro está comiendo el taco. Rosita estará leyendo el libro. (It is snowing. Pedro is eating the taco. Rosita will be reading the book.)

Although the Spanish progressive looks like the English progressive and is structured much the same way, there are some key differences. Following are explanations of the Spanish progressive, including the ways in which it differs from English:

Action in progress: In Spanish, it is very common to use the simple present tense where the progressive would be used in English. Thus a verb form such as estudio is the equivalent not only of "I study," but also of "I am studying." A corollary, then, is that the Spanish present progressive is used to emphasize that something is happening now, is in process, or is being repeated." Thus estoy estudiando would mean "I am studying now" or "I am in the process of studying." In some contexts, the use of the progressive might add a nuance of surprise.

Present progressive not used for future meaning: In English, it is very common to use present progressive forms to discuss future events. Thus "we are eating at 7" is roughly the same as saying "we will eat at 7." In Spanish the progressive would not be used under such circumstances. Say either comemos a las 7 (simple present) or comeremos a las 7 (simple future).

Spanish-Using Progressive Verb Forms -from- Free Spanish Lessons

Seldom used with certain verbs: A number of Spanish verbs typically aren't used in the progressive forms. These include common verbs of motion such as ir (to go), volver (to return) and venir (to come) and verbs referring to mental states such as amar (to love) and saber (to know). Thus to ask, "Where are you going?," say "¿Adónde vas?" Another verb normally not used in the progressive is llevar in the sense of "to wear." Thus "he is wearing the blue shirt" would be expressesd by lleva la camisa azul; the progressive would not be used. (But see the paragraph below about repeated actions.) Other verbs that are very seldom used in the progressive form are estar, haber (used to form the perfect tenses) and poder (to be able).

One not-always-reliable test you can use to determine whether the progressive is acceptable when translating an English sentence is to add the phrase "in the process of" and see if it sounds awkward. For example, to say someone is "in the process of wearing the shirt" doesn't make much sense, so neither would the progressive in Spanish. But to say someone "is in the process of eating" does make sense, so the progressive in Spanish is possible (although still less likely to be used than in English).

Progressive used to describe prolonged events: In past and future tenses, the progressive often signifies something that took or will be taking an extraordinarily long time. For example, estuvimos esperando cuatro horas could be used to say "we were waiting for four hours."

Referring to repeated actions: Sometimes the progressive forms indicate that an action is repeating; this is especially true when used with certain verbs such as ir and venir. Estoy yendo mucho al club, I'm going to the club often.

Regional variations: Despite what you read on this page, you may hear some of the no-nos listed here, especially in parts of Latin America, where the progressive forms are apparently used more than they are in Spain. It is possible this is the case due to the influence of English on the language (or, to be more precise, the influence of news and entertainment translated poorly from English to Spanish).

kids? And why was that guy selling time-share condos right in
front of the fish tanks? Well, it is an aquarium. The biggest and
most comprehensive in Mexico. But like so many attractions in
Mexico, you get more than you pay for, and sometimes more than
you want. The rest of the story, complete with audio, can be
found here:

--> PREPOSITION "SIN"
The Spanish preposition "sin" is like the English "without" as
in:

El hombre salió sin pagar la cuenta.
The man left without paying the bill.

But, sometimes "sin" is combined with an infinitive to express
the idea that something has yet to be done:

Hay muchas cuentas sin pagar.
There are a lot of unpaid bills.

Remember, double negatives are perfectly acceptable in Spanish,
and so "sin" is often followed by another negative word:

Salió sin comer nada.
She left without eating anything.

--> FALSE COGNATES
estar constipado - to have a cold
estar estreñido - to be constipated

editor - publisher
redactor - editor

fastidioso - annoying
puntilloso - fastidious

--> PROVERB
Old age comes a creeping.
Pasando el tiempo llegamos a viejos.

Best Way to Learn Foreign Language by Jason Gordon

Best Way to Learn Foreign Language

There is nothing more interesting, rewarding, or difficult than learning a foreign language. It is often said that if you don't know a foreign language, you don't know your own. When confronted with different grammar styles and different words that express unique meanings, you will notice things about your own native tongue that appear strange when looked at objectively.

As you begin your path to fluency in any foreign language, it is important for you to know that there are effective, fast ways to acquire proficiency in a foreign language and there are slow, ineffective methods. By distinguishing between them, you will be able to find the best way to learn foreign language.

Memorization: Obviously memorization is not the best way to learn foreign language. Memorization is an important part of language learning but there are right and wrong ways to go about it. Memorizing a list of words and grammar rules will not make you any more fluent in a foreign language than memorizing numbers and equations will make you good at math. You have to learn related patterns based on previous knowledge and practice problems.

The same thing applies to learning a foreign language. You need to group words and practice with easy grammar and vocabulary first before moving onto more difficult patterns. The first step is always the alphabet and pronunciation. If you don't memorize the sounds you won't be able to recognize or reproduce them. Memorization is more a tool used in language learning than a method itself though you will still see some foreign language classes relying on it exclusively much to the detriment of the learner.

Translation: Translation is when the learner constantly translates from their native tongue into the target language. You will find this often with tourists who tried to learn a few words before going on their trip abroad. They will try to say "It's a lovely evening for a walk" by literal translation and will end up saying "evening love is a walk" much to the confusion of the natives. With that as an example, you can see why translation is not the best way to learn foreign language.

Language is bound to culture and even if you get the wording right, chances are your literal translation will always sound strange to the native speaker of the target language. You have to learn to think in the target language. The first step is to listen. After you have understood the unique tones and ways of expressing meaning in the target language, you will stop having to rely on translation as a way to learn foreign language.

Immersion: Immersion is the best way to learn foreign language. There are two basic types of immersion.

Passive Immersion: Though the keyword immersion is present; unless you are between the ages of 2 and 10, you will find acquiring a language passively to be near impossible. Passive immersion means just exposing yourself to the language without any effort to understand on your part.

It is like constantly playing a tape but never listening to the words or watching a movie in the target language but reading the subtitles the whole time. Your brain is programmed to find meaning. If you don't program it to seek meaning in those strange sounds and words, then they just become background noise.

Active Immersion: By far the best way to learn foreign language is active immersion. Active immersion means that you put yourself in the natural setting of the language you want to learn. For some, that means actually moving to Spain to learn Spanish or Japan to learn Japanese. This has the double effect of forcing you to listen for meaning and speak in the target language. For most, however, moving abroad is not a possibility. The next best thing is a good language learning program and regular conversation with a native speaker.

Jason Gordon is a freelance writer living in Japan. He is a native speaker of English and fluent in Spanish, Romanian, and Japanese. Click Here To find out Jason's reccommended best way to learn a foreign langauge active immersion program.
